News: Introducing the Operative Discipline

The Operative discipline focuses on mastering the ebb and flow of the Matrix in order to perform amazing feats of strength and agility. Abilities in the Operative discipline tree will produce the most directly combat-oriented characters of the Matrix. Whether lining up trick shots with a rifle or devastating opponents with martial arts finesse, Operatives are constantly striving to improve how they use the Matrix in order to enhance themselves and their combat techniques.

“Listen to me, Coppertop. We don't have time for twenty questions. Right now, there's only one rule: Our way or the highway.” – Switch, The Matrix

Main Abilities:

Strengths:

  • Superior damage potential both in Interlock and using ranged weapons
  • Faster health regeneration during downtime
  • Able to draw foes into Interlock against their will
  • Able to locate Data Nodes, the hidden information paths that run through the Matrix

Weaknesses:

  • Lacks support abilities such as patching (heals), viruses (targeted debuffs, or downgrades), or boosters (personal buffs, or upgrades)
  • May have difficulties in soloing, if unprepared or careless

Play Styles:

Solo play:

Operatives on their own should be somewhat cautious when they pick a fight. Yet since they will frequently have superior combat tactics and toughness than their enemies, as long as they are prepared the Operative should not need to worry. In order to best prepare for battle, the solo Operative should consider stocking up on consumables that restore health or offer upgrades to combat abilities, as these can sometimes mean the difference between life and death.

Group play:

Operatives are the workhorses of most teams. In melee they should be on the front line, going toe to toe with enemies while the rest of the team backs them up with cover fire, upgrades and healing. As ranged combatants, they can rain death down on enemies with well placed shots. Operatives can also easily switch between the two styles, depending on the composition of the group and the nature of the mission at hand.

Main Abilities:

Combat Insight (Awakened 1)
As the Operative learns more about the flow of the Matrix, they can learn how to better move with the Matrix. Fists and feet hit harder or strike more sensitive areas, Bullets travel straight and true. The result is that the Operative is able to deal greater damage.

Hindering Shot (Combat Insight 1)
A well placed shot can stop an enemy cold in their tracks. Hindering Shot is useful in that the Operative can use it to either stop a fleeing opponent, allowing the Operative to catch up or to stop a pursuing enemy, giving the Operative breathing room to make good their escape.

Intensify Damage (Combat Insight 1)
when activated, Intensify Damage gives you a brief boost to your damage dealing capability.

Compel Close Combat (Intensify Damage)
Many enemies in the Matrix rely on staying out of Interlock to use their abilities. Compel Close Combat increases an Operative's chance to pull these enemies into Interlock, cutting them off from their most powerful skills. This is highly useful against support combatants, who hang back using patches and boosters on their teammates.

Locate Data Node (Hindering Shot)
The Matrix is full of invisible pathways of information, winding through everything. With this ability loaded, you'll be able to use specialized tools to locate where these pathways intersect. This is especially useful if you also choose to load an ability from the Spy discipline that allows you to . mine $Information from Data Nodes you've found.

Operative (Intensify Damage, Hindering Shot, Combat Insight 2)
The life of an Operative is almost non-stop action, so you have to be able to maximize how your downtime is spent. With this ability you'll regain health much quicker while sitting.

Looking Forward:

The Operative is able to specialize further as either a Spy or a Soldier.

As a Spy, Operatives will learn the path of stealth and subterfuge, blending in with the currents of the Matrix to become virtually invisible and then striking from the shadows. They will also be able to tap into the hidden data nodes they found as Operatives and extract raw Information.

If Operatives choose the path of the Soldier, they will continue to improve their combat skills in the Matrix. A new array of ranged and Interlock combat abilities and further specialist disciplines will become available, as well as improved self-defense techniques which allow the Soldier to shrug off or even avoid damage.

Complementary Disciplines:

Solo:

Operatives who also take Hacker abilities will be able to put their ranged prowess to good use alongside viral attacks and self patching. An Operative/Hacker combination loadout is truly an army of one.

For example, loading out Operative with a discipline like Upgrade Artist (with its focus on combat upgrades and negative status effect removal) is a great benefit in group play. Or, if offense is what gets your blood pumping, load out Operative with the Despoiler discipline. Its focus on enemy downgrades and area-of- effect attacks combines to make the Operative a true terror on the battlefield.

Grouping:

Operatives play well with any other discipline. Grouped with another Operative, they can offer ranged support while the other Operative fights hand to hand. With a Hacker, the Operative acts as a human shield and draws enemy aggression, allowing the Hacker to put his patching abilities and viral attacks to good use. Pairing with a Coder is similar to pairing with a Hacker, except that a Coder can send a simulacra (pet) in to fight alongside the Operative and take some of the damage.

Minimum Level: 1

Hints and Tips:

Health Pills are the Operative's best friend. Keep a handy supply of these on hand at all times. Although teaming up with a Hacker may keep you healthy most of the time, the wise Operative always prepares for the worst.
